Iron Crosses amongst the stone in St. Martins Churchyard, Horsley, Gloucestershire, England

Ramdom Stones

This posting is dedicated to the gravestones which have nothing at all to do with my family history but which have amused or touched me when I came across them:

In Skaneateles .... William Quinlan, 1844-1961 ..... did this fellow die by the sword?

What a lovely way to mark the passing of Mary Ellithorpe born 25th December 1922 and died 22nd October 1962. ...... I wonder if she signed it herself.

Was the spelling intentional or by mistake?

R.I.P. E. Leo Welch, 1883-1966

24 hours after photographing this stone, I was heading back to Australia for the funeral of a close family member. I am still moved and comforted by the Irish proverb on this stone for the McQuigg family:

Sarah K McQuigg died 22nd October 1959,

Henry McQuigg died 17th February 1965,

Parke McQuigg died 1st May 1995

and Margaret who has no date of death - does that mean she is still alive?

"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die"
