Horsley Churchyard 2013

Horsley Churchyard 2013
Iron Crosses amongst the stone in St. Martins Churchyard, Horsley, Gloucestershire, England

Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva, Ontario, NY

I returned to Geneva and went to the cemetery where, some years ago, I had found the grave of Charles Hyatt (1831-1912) and his wife Ellen (1839-1920) .

If you have previously read this blog, you may be aware that when I first found the grave, it was overgrown with a thick layer of turf and the gravesite manager dug out the turf for me to see the marker stones.

This very helpful man promised to put gravel beneath the markers and thereby raise them up to a level where they would remain visible. I was very grateful to him and went away feeling pleased that I had "done something" for the ancestors.

Sadly, the man didn't live up to his promises (don't get me started on men and their promises!!)and the graves are now overgrown again. I had not gone to the cemetery armed with a spade this time and, since it was a public holiday, there were no staff on site that day. I did the best I could with a stick I found nearby, but ..... they are in a sad a sorry state and I wish I was closer so that I could clean them up and make sure that gravel was put in place.

Here are this year's photos, but please ...... if you happen to be anywhere near, please take a spade and remove the grass!

Charles' first wife, Sarah Fowler, died in 1857 leaving him with a small daughter.

He married his second wife Ellen Hopkins in the Independent Chapel, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire in 1860. Ellen was the daughter of Robert and Ellen Hopkins.

Father and Mother:

Hervey Chapman 1845-1922

Sarah Case 1846-1920

Fred Chapman's second wife:

Cora B Chapman 1875-1960

Does anyone know Cora's maiden name?

Frederick H Chapman 1866-1951

"Our Darling": Minnie Chapman, the firstborn child of Fred Chapman and Emma Hyatt who was born on 23 January 1890 and died on 30th August 1891

Emma (Hyatt) Chapman 1870-1899

Fred Chapman's grave is between his two wives in Amber Cemetery

Someone has put flowers on the graves and before I left I wrote a note and attached it to the flowers hoping that whoever is tending the graves will contact me.

No response so far, but I live in hope!

My cousin noticed that similar flowers had been placed on graves nearby and when we investigated, we discovered that they were connected through Fred Chapman's sister Minnie who married John R. Cooper.

John R Cooper 1868-1959 and wife Minnie Cooper 1873-1951

Minnie was Minnie Chapman before her marriage.

I wonder how many Mini Coopers there are these days?

Incidentally, you can see the Chapman graves in the background.

Fred R Cooper born 12 Jan 1896 in Syracuse and killed in action 14th Oct 1918 in France

This sign speaks for itself!

Ramdom Stones

This posting is dedicated to the gravestones which have nothing at all to do with my family history but which have amused or touched me when I came across them:

In Skaneateles .... William Quinlan, 1844-1961 ..... did this fellow die by the sword?

What a lovely way to mark the passing of Mary Ellithorpe born 25th December 1922 and died 22nd October 1962. ...... I wonder if she signed it herself.

Was the spelling intentional or by mistake?

R.I.P. E. Leo Welch, 1883-1966

24 hours after photographing this stone, I was heading back to Australia for the funeral of a close family member. I am still moved and comforted by the Irish proverb on this stone for the McQuigg family:

Sarah K McQuigg died 22nd October 1959,

Henry McQuigg died 17th February 1965,

Parke McQuigg died 1st May 1995

and Margaret who has no date of death - does that mean she is still alive?

Hyatt Graves in Toronto

I recently went to visit my cousin in Toronto. She and I went to visit some of the family gravesites and this was the first we found in Mount Pleasant Cemetery:

Frederick Earnest Hyatt
Born 4th February 1904 and died 7th October 1943
and his wife:
Grace Hildane Allen
Born 23rd February 1904 and died 14th April 1963

Nearby were more .... but some of these required a bit of spadework!

This is the beautifully clear and crisp headstone of the Hyatt-Redfern family plot:

Until the Day Break

In front of this headstone the grass had overgrown the markers, but armed with our trusty tools, we unearthed the the following stones:

William F Redfern

Born 1st April 1917 and Died 21 January 1925

Florence E Hyatt born 15th May 1889 and died 8th September 1868
Stanley Redfern born 29th September 1890 and died 24th February 1969
and their son:
Jack Stanley Redfern born 6th October 1912 and died 18th January 1931

This is the father of Earnest and Florence:
Frederick Fowler Hyatt
born in Stratford-on-Avon, England in 1862 and died in Toronto, Canada in 1928

Glorious Gloucestershire

Yesterday was a glorious day in Gloucestershire.

I took an Australian friend with me to visit Bourton-on-the-Hill.

This is the village where John Hyatt died in 1851. Some of his descendants died there later, and as I walked up the little path into the churchyard, the sun was shining on one of their headstones.

Highland Cemetery, Marcellus, New York, USA

On my recent tour of New York State, I didn't have time to visit the graveyard in Marcellus, but fortunately, cousin Michael did.

He very kindly sent me the following photographs of Hyatt graves in Highland Cemetery, Marcellus and I can now share them with you.

Thanks Michael.

Frederick Hyatt 1863 - 1926

Marion (Miller) Hyatt 1909 - 1963

Francis B Hyatt 1909 - 1983 and Marion (Miller) Hyatt 1909 - 1963

Francis B Hyatt 1909 - 1983

Vernon M Hyatt 1906 - 1994 and Doric C (Ditch) Hyatt 1907 - 1997

William J Hyatt 1875 - 1939

Anna (Betts) Hyatt 1878 - 1942

Frank E Hyatt 1872 - 1953

Frank E Hyatt 1872 - 1953

Anna (Betts) Hyatt 1872 - 1942

Arthur W Hyatt 1904 - 1999 and Dorothy (Turner) Hyatt 1906 - 1994

Elizabeth (Burbridge) Hyatt 1880 - 1962

Please note that the photos are not in any particular order. They are beautifully crisp stones which are easy to read but what a pity there isn't just s litte more detail. The maiden names of wives is so useful, as are the exact dates of birth and death.

How ungrateful do I sound! Will I never be satisfied?

p.s.
Please feel free to add any of this missing information if you know it!!

James Hyatt 1841 - 1914

Here is a photo of James Hyatt.

He was the elder brother of Charles Hyatt (bn 1831) whose grave is shown in an earlier posting.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were to find someone with a photograph of Charles?

James is photographed here with his second wife Jane Elliot (1842-1922)
